Mostly blind, eyes burning, I fired the rifle at a shadow and was rewarded by a shriek of pain even as another voice shouted for everyone to press forward.
Iâd make them think twice about that.
I shot at another shadow, and a gun went off once in reply, but the bullet pinged harmlessly off the wall somewhere deeper in the hold, unseen through the thick smoke. The smoke didnât have anywhere to dissipate to but was slowly settling toward the floor, revealing the figures coming toward us in a little more detail.
âDonât shoot!â the same voice yelled. âThe plateâs in here!â
I fired my last round and blew one of the shadows backward. âStay back!â I yelled in order to bluff like I had more ammunition in my gun.
âThere are only two of them! Go!â the leader ordered.
It didnât seem like Anders was capable of firing my gun, locked up in fear beside me, but I didnât have time to take it from him as the group of thieves ran toward us through the smoke. I flipped the rifle around so I held the hot barrel in my hands and swung it like a baseball bat. The thief closest to me dropped to their knees and slid under the arc, but at the same time, I lashed out with one foot and landed a hard kick right in their side. The slide turned into a tumble, but before I could finish them off, another thief crashed into me and drove me back a few steps, the shotgun trapped between us where I couldnât swing it.
âHere! Iâm over here!â Orson shouted from the wall.
I got my feet under me before the man could push me any farther, and then I shoved him back using the shotgun. He got his hands around it, and we vied for control of it until he leaned his weight back too far in order to pull it from me, and I simply let go of it. Surprised, the man staggered back, but he also turned the rifle in his hands so the barrel was facing toward me. The smoke had cleared just enough that I could see the smirk on his face as he pulled the trigger, but the gun merely clicked. I smirked at him instead as his eyes widened, closing the distance with a jump and whipping a left hook into his temple.
âMr. Archer!â Anders cried, but I couldnât see where he was through the smoke and the press of bodies.
Several thieves had reached the crate with the plate inside, and one of them hoisted it into his arms while the other stood at his back with a pistol drawn. I leapt to stop them from leaving, but the thief fired at me, and I dropped belly-first to the deck to avoid being hit.
I rolled to get back to my feet, but the pair moved off toward the door while the other thieves in the room moved to block my way. I still couldnât see where Anders was.
